Escape From Bray

Escape From Bray is a arcade style mobile game released on the Google Play Store. It was created in a team of two (with Fiachra Cassidy-Hand) for a class in my Creative Digital Media Masters.

Fiachra coded the application while I handled design and UI facets of the project.

It is based on the old arcade game Spyhunter and tries to incorporate the humor of the games of that era. The player controls a white Honda Civic as it tries to evade the Gardai, while picking up health packages and weapons.

The visual style apes the nighttime/neon ambiance of the movie Drive and games like GTA Vice City.

The car is viewed from a top down perspective and the player tilts the phone to steer left and right. This presented the biggest asset creation challenge, to create distinct assets which could be easily distinguished and retain their character while moving at speed and viewed top down. Colour and light were important solutions to these issues, as the enemy vehicles are a violent pink while the police sirens flash constantly.

During the project I learned a lot about creating atmosphere and style in a game, as well as the practicalities of asset creation. I also developed an understanding of the iterative nature of game development and the necessity of continuous testing and refinement.
